A New Year, A New Program

To all of you out there, of course, I wish you all a very happy new year 2017! Wishing you all the best, great success with all of your plans, health, and prosperity. But also interesting meet-ups, discussions and engagements with the many diverse people at any of the conferences that we as IEEE Technology & Engineering Management Society will organize and support organizing in this year 2017.

Of course, this year is a very special year as we will be putting up the very first TEMSCON 2017. We therefore kindly invite all of our members to join in, at this inaugural edition of TEMSCON, or at one of the other conferences in case that is more convenient and in your own geographic area. And we ask all of our members to inform all those friend and non-members with whom you share your common interest in technology, engineering, and management.

The following provides an overview of the currently planned conferences as scheduled over the year 2017 as they will take place in April, June, August, September and October.

SIIE 2017

Our dialogue with CIEMS Research (Competitive intelligence and Strategic Management Center) started in 2015, with as a result an agreement in 2016 to collaborate for the 2017 edition of SIIE – 7th International Conference on Information Systems and Economic Intelligence. The theme of SIIE 2017 is “Trends in Technology Management and Economic Intelligence”.

Originally this conference was planned for in February 2017 but has been rescheduled to April 13-17 2017 in Marrakech, Morocco.

More details on the call for papers can be downloaded and found on http://siie.loria.fr/CFP_SIIE2017_(EN).pdf . Note that the CfP closes on February 1st, and more info on the venue and program under development, can be found on the conference website www.siie.fr .

TEMSCON 2017

Whereas IEEE TEMS evidently has a long history in its predecessors IEEE TMC and IEEE EMS and its associated conferences, it is important to recognize that we really are a new society: the Technology & Engineering Management Society and so we are to give birth to our new and inaugural edition of our flagship Technology and Engineering Management Society CONference: TEMSCON (www.temscon.org). Of course, the preparations hereof started in 2016, and we are already discussing its next edition too.

TEMSCON 2017 will be held in Silicon Valley (Santa Clara), California USA from June 8-10, 2017. Silicon Valley, the center of high-tech innovation and development with industries spanning all areas of the world. Clearly a great opportunity to visit and engage with engineers and managers from many innovative tech companies but also all of your fellow researchers.

The 2017 theme will be: “Innovation and Technology Management in the Entrepreneurial Era – Moving Technical Idea to Market”. Hence this conference aims to provide studies on the concepts, theories, and best practices in the field of technology management. For technology and engineering, this addresses the methodologies required to move technical ideas to market. The call for papers is still open until the end of the month in January 2017 (!) and can be found here: http://temscon.org/call-for-papers/ so there still is a short time to submit your paper.

In today’s technology world, the engagement steps to move a stimulating technical concept into a marketable product has many challenges and requires a broad understanding of technical and business practices. This is true in an entrepreneurship environment, where a startup is creating a business as well in an intrapreneurship, where steps are within an existing company. Our event addresses these areas including innovation, engineering management, marketing, manufacturing, supply chain, and people matters. Requirements and processes for new technologies are also studied including IT, Internet, IoT, Biotech, healthcare, and social media. Expected papers document research activities, case studies, and best practices. The conference is designed to be valued by the engineering, business, and management communities.

Expect an Industry Forum as part of TEMSCON 2017, where senior Industry speakers will present their visions, directions and challenges in technology management in today’s modern companies.

In addition, it will have educational programs for students and young professionals as well as an Editor’s Panel.

It will begin with a panel of executives from four distinctly different companies in four different markets, but each creatively and effectively managing the fast-paced change in technology, market opportunity, and internal management. Each will provide a short description of how they view the issues in their markets and present a brief case study to illustrate the practices they employ to successful manage and lead, followed by a discussion with the audience.

So join us in that discussion, hear new ideas, learn from others, and of course enter the discourse on your own field and topic when presenting or listening to a paper presentation.

ISIE 2017

ISIE 2017

In collaboration with IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, the 2017 IEEE 26th International Symposium on Industrial Electronics is planned for in Edinburgh, Scotland from June 19-21. As IEEE TEMS we have a track (T14) on that conference entitled “Entrepreneurship and Management – Challenges for Industrial Electronics”. Should you want to contribute thereto please respond asap. The closure date is really close by for papers and was extended to January 10th 2017 (!).

ICE 2017

We have a long standing relation with the ICE conference what started as the International Conference on Concurrent Engineering, then evolved into Concurrent Enterprising and nowadays the International Conference on Engineering, Technology, and Innovation. But since ICE has such a longstanding tradition and relation to its community the acronym ICE remains. In 2017 the 23rd edition of ICE will be held from June 25-28 in Madeira Portugal.

The 2016 theme will be “Engineering, Technology & Innovation Management Beyond 2020: New Challenges, New Approaches”. Details, as always, can be found on www.ice-conference.org which is expected to be updated regularly as the conference program develops. And while the 23rd edition has yet to take place, the 24ste edition is also already being worked on and planned to be held in Stuttgart, Germany. Moreover, the 25th celebration edition in 2019 has already been taken up by the ICE board at the June 2016 meeting in Trondheim, Norway. The passion and commitment for ICE are clearly thriving.

ICMSE 2017

We are happy to announce that after the August 2016 edition of the International Conference on Management, Science and Engineering (ICMSE) held in Olten, Switzerland the 2017 edition is expected to be held in August 2017 in Japan. Editing this section of the news just after a very early 6 am the conference call,  we mutually agreed to work together on a continuation of the relationship on ICMSE for the coming years with Harbin Institute of Technology and IEEE TEMS. Details of the upcoming ICMSE 2017 are yet to be published on the website http://icmse.intl.hit.edu.cn/ and will be announced on our IEEE channels too of course.

ICDIM 2017

After the ICDIM 2016 conference held in Porto, Portugal we are now looking forward to the 12th edition of the International Conference on Digital Information Management to be organized at the Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan from September 12 -14, 2017. The details will follow with upcoming updates of the www.icdim.org website. The ICDIM is a multidisciplinary conference on digital information management, science and technology. The principal aim of this conference is to bring people in academia, research laboratories and industry together, and offer a collaborative platform to address the emerging issues and solutions in digital information science and technology. The relative small setting allows for a good discussion in a safe enviroment, in particular for young and/or new researchers.

E-TEMS 2017

14
From Steve’s presentation and described in publication at http://www.research.gatech.edu/evpr/crosstalk.

Last year in the first week of November 2016 we had the very first edition of the European Technology & Engineering Management Summit (E-TEMS) at the ZENTEC Zentrum für Technologie, Existenzgründung und Cooperation in Frankfurt, Germany. In collaboration with the IEEE Germany Section and the local German Chapter, this conference was organized with as theme of this first edition:  “Engineering for Economy 4.0 – Managing Increasing Complexity and Speed”. With an real interesting key-note from Stephen (Steve) E. Cross, Executive Vice President for Research and Professor, H. Milton School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology,  Atlanta Georgia (USA). Steve presented a model of an innovation ecosystem: the Atlanta experience. About the so- called Tech Square, the eight-square-block area in Midtown designed to facilitate private and public research ventures, that has attracted the corporate research centers of 12 Fortune 500 companies, including AT&T, Pana
sonic, and Coca-Cola, as well as hundreds of small technology startups. And just recently, NCR, one of the largest U.S. electronics companies, moved its global headquarters from the suburbs to Tech Square. And about 150 years of history surrounding Georgia Tech, social responsibility, leadership, civil rights movement and more.

This first edition of E-TEMS, while relatively small, created a comfortable setting for the participants to enter into intense discussions amongst each other, a great value and experience in particular for the young researchers.

For 2017 we are planning to have the E-TEMS in Munich, Germany in the month of October and are discussion with Dr. Thomas Holzmann and Professor Klaus Sailer on how to organize this edition. As soon as more information becomes available we will inform you. Details will also be placed on the updated website: http://www.e-tems.org  as we plan along.
